After what seemed to be a never ending winter, spring is finally in full bloom in Hungary. This post is simply to celebrate this. Well, and to celebrate my new camera that I love so much!
The photos were taken during a weekend hike in the Mátra Mountains this May. Hungary is not particularly famous for mountains, actually, most of our country is plain and our most famous national park, Hortobágy is located on the Great Hungarian Plain (yes, it’s the proper name). However, we have some mountains, and we even have a peak that we are the most proud of: Kékes, the highest peak of Mátra. With its 1014 meters this is our only peak higher than a thousand.
To dramatize its significance even more, let me tell you that Mátra is also home to one of those very few waterfalls that we have in Hungary. 10 meters tall, Ilona Waterfall is the tallest natural drop of water in the country.
Our favorite time for hiking in Hungary is spring. Lush green forest and meadows covered with wildflowers are just a lovely view to enjoy. Especially after such a gloomy, chilly, long winter we left behind. Here’s to all the colors of spring!
