Monthly Recap: May – June 2021

We’ve recently arrived home from our first road trip this summer, from Serbia and North Macedonia, and we’re doing something highly unusual now: having a family vacation. Okay, it’s mostly Tomi who has all the free time to spend with his grandparents, while his parents – that’s us, hah – are busy working and organizing flat renovation or a Greek island holiday (or escaping for solo hikes in Bea’s case). Nevertheless, some lazy beach time at Lake Balaton, the ultimate vacation destination of a typical Hungarian family is also involved.

We’re fully vaccinated. We both got our second Pfizer shots before our road trip, and we hope that things (and countries) will open up as vaccination proceeds. European countries seem to be the realistic destinations for this summer, we are not planning any international trips yet. Though we have another reason for that which we’ll share in the next monthly recap. 😛

Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

The Balkan road trip happened. We’ve been planning this trip for years. Well, okay, not this one, but a Balkan road trip in general. First we postponed it, because it’s so close to where we live, we can do it any time, so let’s plan a longer trip in Australia. (Absolutely no regrets though! :D) Then the next year I planned a Montenegro-Bosnia summer trip focused on hiking in the high mountains, but at seven months pregnant with Tomi, I had to realize that neither high mountains, nor long drives are for me anymore. Then our little boy arrived, but what really prevented our Balkan road trip was COVID that’s also arrived shortly after our boy. Fast forward almost 2 years, and here we are, it finally happened!

North Macedonia is such a barely known gem. I know, they say it about a lot of places (and we hope, there are a lot of barely known gems left in the world). But the cliché is exactly true in this case. Travelers are not that much aware of North Macedonia yet, and this country offers a lot, both natural and cultural treasures. You bet we’re about to tell everything that’s worth seeing and doing there! Stay tuned for our future posts.

Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna, Austria

An unexpected day trip to Vienna. Vienna was the first city abroad that we visited together with Csaba on a self-organized trip as students. He proposed there. We return there every year, but we haven’t been there since Tomi was born – until now. And we love Vienna so much, and it will never change. The reason for our visit? Well, that shall remain a secret until next month (but if you follow us on Instagram, you might already know).

Coming up in July

Cathedral of Saint Sava, Belgrade, Serbia

Well, Lake Balaton is already happening. While we are here, we’re also eager to explore more of our favorite region in Hungary: the Balaton Uplands.

And we’ve recently booked a flight to Crete for the end of July! Honestly, Bea was browsing flights, checking prices, and then we booked those tickets to Crete that evening. 😀 But any Greek island is a perfect choice, right? Crete seems to be one, and we’re getting more excited as days pass. There are not just so many magical beaches (obviously), but also hikes and cultural sights on the island. 9 days seem so short – but we’ll make the most of it, Bea’s working on it, as usual.

How about you? How was your June?
