Our May started in the best way possible: by visiting Barcelona for the first time! It was followed by several weekends fully packed with sightseeing and outdoor activities in Slovakia and Hungary. They made us realize again that we don’t need to travel far away to explore beautiful places and get amazed. All we need is keeping our eyes open and take a fresh look at the countries we think we know – to realize how many secrets they have that we still don’t know.
To absolutely no one’s surprise we got soaked again while hiking in the full day rain in Slovak Paradise National Park. But except for that one day we enjoyed a warm and sunny May that was more like summer than spring. The first sightseeing with ice-cream in hand is also ticked for this year. 🙂
Highlights of May
Barcelona. We found our favorite city in Europe. We loved everything about Barcelona: the breathtaking architecture, the pretty parks, the wonderful views, the palm trees, the beach, the Mediterranean vibe… We’ve already written a long post to praise it all – read it here!
Košice. We’ve already been to a lot of national parks in Slovakia, but the only city we’ve visited until this May was Bratislava. Well, it was lovely – and that says it all. Košice was different. It’s actually smaller than Bratislava and it’s a city we can’t help but love – colorful historical houses, the singing fountain, flowers everywhere we go in the city center and the enormous St. Elisabeth Cathedral. We can’t wait to write more about it!
Canoeing in Körös-Maros National Park, Hungary. So we decided to explore all of Hungary’s national parks this year and in May we’ve visited one we’ve never been before: Körös-Maros National Park. Probably we also found the most enjoyable way to visit it: on water. Canoeing on the backwaters of River Körös was so much fun!
Hiking in Little Fatra & Great Fatra National Parks. We’ve already been to these two national parks of Slovakia last year but our visit was brief and we haven’t seen much. Oh, there are actually so much more to see as we realized on our second visit. We’ve explored beautiful hiking trails and collected some more hiking ideas for the future. For the close future! 🙂

Panorama in Yosemite's Mirror Lake is quite spectacular – and May is the perfect time to find the lake filled with water to actually enjoy the mirror. Yes, waterfalls, lakes and even rivers can dry up in California by the end of summer. #yosemite #mirrorlake #ourwanders #california
Coming up in June
Just like May June also starts with a long weekend and we already have a fabulous idea what to do with it: visiting Hallstatt and do some hiking in the Alps! We can’t help having all the beautiful Insta shots in our heads about Hallstatt that is said to be one of the most charming mountain towns in Europe. We’ll see how reality can cope with it. 😀 And we try to embrace the fact that summer or not rainy weekends are not at all rare in the Alps.
For the rest of June we will mix sightseeing and castle tours with hiking, climbing and canoeing in national parks in Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. We don’t even dare to list all the places and activities now – they will probably fill our July as well…
