Not far from famous Vintgar Gorge near Bled, there’s another fairy tale gorge with emerald green water, crystal clear pools, countless small cascades and a 20 metres high waterfall at the end. And without the crowds that’s so typical of Vintgar Gorge, especially in the summer.
The gem near Lake Bohinj
Mostnica Gorge is located close to Lake Bohinj, its entrance is a short walk from the village of Stara Fužina. There’s entrance fee to the gorge – 3 EUR per adult in 2020.
A well-maintained, moderately difficult trail led us closely along the rushing stream in Mostnica Gorge. We liked the small cascades and the pools where we could see all the pebbles at the bottom of this magically green water.
Some of our favorite views were from the bridges though.
It took us about 2 hours to walk along Mostnica Gorge and reach 20 metres high Mostnica Waterfall at the end.
Actually, the waterfall is outside of the gorge. The short trail runs through meadows that were covered by millions of wildflowers in June and had the giant peaks of the Julian Alps towering above them. As it sounds, even though we were outside of the gorge, we found the trail to the waterfall spectacular. Not to mention Mostnica Waterfall itself. 🙂
Visiting with a baby
We visited Mostnica Gorge on our second Slovenia road trip which means that our baby boy was with us, and yes, the trail is completely safe with a baby carrier. There are not too many flat areas, but we put down a blanket in the forest, not far from Mostnica Waterfall, to let our Tomi crawl around a bit.
Otherwise, we think it’s a family-friendly trail, not too long, not too hard and quite safe.
Where to stay?
Since Mostnica Gorge is walking distance from Stara Fužina village, and parking anywhere by Lake Bohinj is expensive (about 2-3 EUR per hour), it’s worth finding a place that offers free parking. We stayed in Rooms Pekovec Bohinj in Stara Fužina and loved it. It’s about 30 minutes walk from the lakeshore and maybe 15 minutes from the entrance of Mostnica Gorge.
