Turning Three – Our 3rd Blogiversary
Our blog is turning three today. And we gladly celebrate. We started this journey 3 years ago, and though our hopes and dreams got somewhat aligned to reality by now, we like this blog more than ever.
Blogging, photography – oh, and travel! – is still a hobby for us in the first place, while both of us have our full-time jobs. But we’ve put an insane amount of time and energy into this blog, and maybe that’s why it belongs to us more than anything else we’ve ever created before. We keep doing it because we can’t stop. Because we love it.
Why not to feel bad about monetizing?
But we have to admit that we have dreams to turn it into more than just a hobby. This year we took some more steps to monetize it. We had some affiliate links before, as well, now we display ads, too. First, it felt wrong. Ads never look nice in our opinion – but they can be necessary. And we realized what our real problem was.
We enjoy writing this blog, and it means so much even without earning money from it that we felt bad about trying to earn some money, as well. Like we don’t deserve it. But the truth is that however important joy and fulfillment is, one needs to eat. We have jobs for that, that’s true, but to put more time and work into this blog, we have to focus on it more. If we can earn money with it, we can dedicate more time to it.
How to monetize well?
We’d like to be careful though. Very careful. We’ve always thought that the most valuable thing about our blog is that it’s free in every aspect. Anyone can read it for free. We are free to write whatever we want. We are free to travel wherever we want. We don’t want to give up on this.
We are an average couple who tries to find place for travel in their everyday lives. We don’t want to change it. We doubt we’d ever travel full-time. We don’t want to write sponsored posts either – only as an exception. (We have only one so far, and that’s about a trip that we wanted to do anyway.)
We’ve never accepted offers just because we got one, and we don’t want to change that either. We’d only take part in collaborations that we truly support. We’d only recommend things that we tried and we believe in. We know it’s impossible to monetize a blog without our readers noticing it. You see ugly ads from time to time at the very least.
But we will never compromise the things we value so much about our blog. It should always be our happy place – and maybe a bit of yours, too.
Now let’s see some exciting numbers. They are truly exciting to us since we got half of our overall pageviews in the past 8 months! We are happy to see this blog grow.
